<p>Marami sa mga Pinoy na matagal nang nasa ibang bayan, gaya ng US, ang marahil ay pamilyar sa kultura ng pagbabasa ng komiks sa pinanggalingang bayang Pilipinas.</p>
<p>World class ang kakayahan ng mga Filipino sa paglikha ng komiks. Ang ganda, lalim, at kasiningan ng mga kuwento at dibuhong natunghayan sa mga pahina ng magasing komiks sa mahabang panahon ay maipapantay sa pinakamahuhusay na nagawa ng ibang bansa kabilang na ang US, Hapon, at iba pa. Katunayan, maraming dibuhistang Pinoy ang nirekrut ng mga kumpanya ng komiks dito sa US at sa kasalukuyan ay naninirahan sa California, Nevada, at iba pang mga estado.</p>
<p>Marami  ang bansag sa komiks. Hari ng bangketa. Pambansang aklat ng mga Filipino. Kung anu-ano pa na iisa lamang ang ipinahihiwatig kundi tahasang idinedeklara: na ito ang pinakapopular sa lahat ng mga produktong iniimprenta sa sariling wika.<span id="more-220"></span></p>
<p><strong>Industriya ng Komiks</strong><br />
Pamilyar ang komiks bilang displey na paninda sa mga bangketa sa mga Pinoy na sa kasalukuyan ay may edad na magmula sa dalawampung taon hanggang sa lampas na sa mga tinatawag na baby boomer. Sa paglalakad ay nadaraanan noon ang mga magasing komiks na kaygaganda ng dibuho sa pabalat. Libu-libo ang lingguhang sirkulasyon ng bawat komiks noong araw.</p>
<p>May sampung taon ang nakararaan ay tumigil sa paggawa ng komiks ang conglomerate ng Atlas Publishing na pag-aari ng angkang Roces na kumokontrol sa halos 90 porsiyento ng mga komiks sa buong bansa. Naglaho ang mga komiks sa bangketa. Ngunit hindi sumuko ang mga manlilikha ng komiks. Nagpatuloy ang paglikha ng mga komiks ng iba’t ibang independiyenteng pabliser. Karamihan ng mga komiks na ito ay matatagpuan sa mga bukstor. Sumulpot ang mga blog na paksa ay komiks. Nagkaroon na rin ng mga coffee table books tungkol sa komiks at mga aklat-pagsusuri sa  impact  ng  komiks sa pambansang kamalayan at kasaysayan.</p>
<p>Napakahaba ang naging pag-iral ng komiks sa pambansang landskeyp ng Pilipinas. Pag-iral na napakalayo pang magwakas. Pinatutunayan ito ng pagpapatuloy ng iba’t ibang aktibidades at pagtitipon na may kaugnayan sa komiks bilang sining, libangan, at industriya.</p>
<p><strong>Komikon 2009</strong><br />
Idinaos ang taunang Komikon noong Oktubre 18, 2009, 10 umaga &#8211; 9 gabi, sa Megatrade Hall I ng SM Megamall. Ang Komikon ay nagbibigay ng pagkakataon na makapagtanghal ng mga bagong produktong  komiks, lokal man o imported, na ipinadron sa sikat na Comics Convention sa US. Matatagpuan sa Komikon ang iba’t ibang hapag ng mga ibinebentang komiks, libro, magasin, at iba pang babasahing kaugnay ng komiks. May nakadispley na mga drowing. May mga programa rin katulad ng paggagawad ng taunang “Komikon awards”. Nagsagawa rin ng “auction for a cause” upang matulungan ang mga nasalanta ng mga bagong Ondoy at Pepeng laluna ang mga kabilang sa sektor ng mga tagakomiks.</p>
<p>Isa sa mga regular na dumadalo sa Komikon sa Pilipinas ang pamosong iskolar sa kulturang popular na si  Dr. John A. Lent. Si Dr. Lent ay may Master of Science in Journalism (1960) mula sa Ohio University at PhD. in Mass Communication (1972) sa University of Iowa. Siya ay awtor ng maraming librong tumatalakay sa iba’t ibang sangay at aspeto ng mga sining at kulturang popular na kinabibilangan ng komiks.</p>
<p>Bago ang ebentong ito ay idinaos ang unang Philippine International Cartoon, Comic, and Animation Festival o PICCA Fest noong Oktubre 15 &#8211; 18 na inorganisa ng Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas Inc (SKPI).</p>
<p><strong>Francisco V. Coching</strong><br />
Sa New York ay may “Francisco V. Coching Exhibit in New York, Oct. 26 &#8211; Nov. 26, 2009&#8243; sa Philippine Center na nasa 556 5th Avenue, New York, NY (212) 764-1330. Itatanghal ang mga obra ni Francisco V. Coching na isang dakilang manlilikha ng lokal na komiks.</p>
<p>Si Francisco V. Coching ay isa sa mga haligi ng sining ng komiks sa Pilipinas. Siya ay tanyag na personalidad sa komiks at pangkalahatang sirkulo ng mga alagad ng sining sa mga panahong 1930 &#8211; 1970 bilang matinik na manunulat at dibuhista.</p>
<p>Karamihan sa mga naging nobela ni Coching sa komiks ay naisapelikula. Kabilang sa mga popular na katha niya ang Hagibis, Barbaro, El Indio, Satur, Pedro Penduko, Talipandas, Maldita, Bertong Balutan, Haring Ulupong, Palasig, Gat Sibasib, Bella Bandida, El Vibora, Pagano, at Don Cobarde.</p>
<p>Si Coching ay mistulang one-man army sa komiks. Siya na ang kuwentista ay siya rin ang nag-iiskets ng larawan sa lapis, nagsasatinta nito, at naglalagay ng mga teksto.  Bilang artista sa sining-biswal, kakontemporaryo niya ang mga pintor na sina Carlos “Botong” Francisco at Vicente Manansala. Gaya ng dalawa ay marami ring tinanggap na pagkilala si Coching sa kanyang galing.</p>
<p>Iginawad kay Coching ang “Makasining na Komiks Award” mula sa Manila Commission of Arts and Culture, Presidential Merit Award, at Gawad CCP Para sa Sining.</p>
<p>Maraming naimpluwensiyahan ang istilo ni Coching sa hanay ng mga alagad ng sining ng komiks sa Pilipinas at ibang bansa. Ang kanyang mga likha, na nasa pormang komiks, ay kumakatawan sa pinakamataas na uri ng galing at talino ng isang indibidwal na nakapag-ambag sa yaman ng sining at kultura ng sangkatauhan.</p>
<p>Nagretiro siya noong 1973 sa edad na 54 taon matapos makalikha ng mahigit sa 50 nobelang komiks.</p>
<p>Maipagmamalaki ng bawat Filipino at sinumang may dugong Filipino saanman ang katulad ni Coching na pang-internasyunal ang kalibre bilang alagad  ng  sining. Sa mga may pagkakataon, huwag palampasin ang pagtatanghal na ito upang masaksihan ang mga natatanging obra ni Coching.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Si Dr. Seuss, Si Kenkoy, at ang Araw ng Pagbabasa<br />

<p>Magmula noong 1998 ay ipinagdiriwang taun-taon tuwing Marso 2 ang “Read Across America Day”. Ito ay isang okasyon na nagbibigay-diin sa kahalagahan ng pagbabasa at pagkatuto sa pamamagitan ng pagbabasa sa buong US. Layunin nito na hikayatin ang mga bata na magbasa at palaganapin ang pagbabasa bilang gawain. Itinapat ang petsa ng ebentong ito sa araw ng pagsilang ni Theodore Seuss Geisell noong Marso 2, 1904. Nais maging sentro ng okasyon ang buhay, mga akda, at krusada ni Dr. Seuss na maakit ang mga bata sa hilig sa pagbabasa.</p>
<p>Punong-abala sa paghahanda sa National Read Across America Day ang National Education Association (NEA) katuwang ang Dr. Seuss Enterprises, mga guro, mga laybraryan, mga magulang, mga kergiber, magpahanggang sa mga pulitiko, atleta, artista, at lahat-lahat nang naniniwala sa kahalagahan ng paghahatid ng ‘excitement’ ng pagbabasa sa mga bata.<span id="more-218"></span></p>
<p>Kailangang magtakda ng isang araw na ipinagdiriwang ang gawaing pagbabasa, ito ang naisip ng mga kasapi sa NEA nang likhain at simulan ang okasyong Read Across America Day. Naisip ding itaon ito sa bertdey ng taong nakatulong nang malaki upang maging popular ang pagbabasa sa mga bata.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Seuss</strong><br />
Bihira ang hindi pamilyar sa sagisag ni Theodore Seuss Geisel na ‘Dr. Seuss’. Siya ay isang manunulat at kartunista na naging popular sa kanyang mga aklat-pambata gaya ng Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, at marami pa.</p>
<p>Si Theodore Geisel o Dr. Seuss ay nagsimula bilang manunulat at kartunista ng mga kaganapang pampulitika. Minsan siyang nangarap maging Doktor sa Pilosopiya kaya naging isa sa mga sagisag niya ang ‘Dr. Seuss’ sa paglikha ng mga aklat-pambata. Sa sagisag na ito’y naging ‘Seuss-perstar’ siya sa buong mundo sa larangan ng mga kuwento at aklat na pambata.</p>
<p>Bukod sa pagiging kartunista, may panahon din na si Dr. Seuss ay naging tagapagdibuho ng mga komersiyal na patalastas ng mga kumpanyang General Electric, NBC, Standard Oil, at iba pa. Noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig ay umanib siya sa US Army at naglingkod sa Animation Department na tagapaglikha ng mga propagandang  panggera.</p>
<p>Nang matapos ang digmaan, nagkonsentreyt si Dr. Seuss sa paglikha ng mga aklat-pambata na gawaing naghatid sa kanya ng pambihirang katanyagan at kayamanan. Ang mga aklat niya ay may kabuuang bentang mahigit sa 222 milyong kopya. Marami rin ang naiprodyus na pelikula at mga programa sa telebisyon at entablado na halaw sa mga akda niya.</p>
<p>Hindi siya nakatanggap ng mga medyor na rekognisyon sa angking husay sa paglikha ng literaturang pambata noong nabubuhay pa siya. Sa Caldecott Prize ay karangalang banggit ang pinakamataas na naigawad sa kanya ngunit ang mga akdang naisali niya rito ay tinatawag ngayon na “Caldecott Honor Books”. Siya ay isinama sa California Hall of Fame ng California Museum for History labimpitong taon matapos siyang pumanaw.</p>
<p><strong>Magbasa Upang Maging Mahusay</strong><br />
Napatunayan na batay sa mga pagsasaliksik na ang mga batang nahihikayat na gumugol nang mas mahabang sandali sa pagbabasa ay nagiging mahusay na mag-aaral. Napakahalaga ng pang-eengganyo sa kabataan na mawili sa pagbabasa upang magtagumpay sa paaralan at magkaroon ng panghabambuhay na hilig sa pagbabasa.</p>
<p>Sa Pilipinas, ang malapit na kahanay ni Dr. Seuss bilang awtor na pamilyar sa milyon-milyong mambabasa, partikular sa mga bata, ay ang mga sikat na nobelista sa komiks. Isinulat ni Tony Velasquez ang buhay, kabalbalan at pakikipagsapalaran ni Francisco Harabas alyas Kenkoy na sinubaybayan ng maraming henerasyon ng mga Filipino. Nabasa magmula noong kabataan ng ating mga lolo sa tuhod hanggang sa panahon ng mga kabataan noong dekada otsenta na naiseserye pa ito sa Pilipino Komiks.</p>
<p>Si Francisco Coching ang sumulat at nagdibuho ng Pedro Penduko na ilang beses naisapelikula. Sina Ramon Zamora at Janno Gibbs ay ilan lang sa mga gumanap sa papel na ito sa puting tabing.</p>
<p>Si Mars Ravelo ay popular sa mga nilikha niyang superbayani (superhero) tulad ng Darna, Captain Barbell, Flash Bomba, at iba pa. Sa hanay ng mga artistang babae, parang may tradisyon na ang pagganap sa papel na Darna ay isang katibayan na ikaw ay sikat na. Sina Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, at Judy Ann Santos ang ilan sa mga gumanap na bilang si Darna.</p>
<p>Nakilala rin si Carlo Caparas sa mga superbayani partikular ang Panday na naging serye ng pelikula ni Fernando Poe Jr. Si Pablo Gomez ay madalas gumamit ng mga duwende at engkantada sa kanyang mga nobelang sinubaybayan din ng milyong Filipino bata man o matanda.</p>
<p>Pagkatapos ng mga tradisyunal na karakter-pambata na karamihan ay angkat at kanluranin na tulad nina Snow White, Goldilocks, Jack and Jill, Jack and the Beanstalk, etc. na sinundan ng mga produktong multi-national na Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck, Goofy, at mga halaw sa mga Amerikanong komiks na Superman, Batman, etc. ay mapapansing tanging ang mga kathang-isip mula sa mga lokal na komiks ang nakaagapay upang may matawag na sariling identidad ang mga Filipino sa industriya ng popular na babasahin.</p>
<p>Maaaring sabihing si Darna ay kopya kay Wonder Woman, si Gagamba ay si Spiderman, at marami pang halimbawa ng paggagad. Ang hindi maitatatwa ay ang pagtataglay at paggamit ng mga lokal na akda ng sariling kultura, damdamin, pag-iisip, at higit sa lahat ay wika.</p>
<p>Sa bawat isang batang Pinoy na aktuwal na nakabasa sa aklat ng mga ‘fairy tale’ na gawa ng mga Grimm o ni Hans Christian Andersen o nakatunghay sa mga pahina ng Marvel Comics ay may sampu o higit pang paslit na Pinoy na nakabasa ng pakikipagsapalaran nina Kenkoy, Palos, Zuma, Bondying, Dyesebel, at iba pang likhang-Pinoy sa mga pahina ng lokal na komiks.</p>
<p>Bago pa man nauso ang terminong “literaturang pambata” sa akademiko nitong saysay ay naririyan na ang mga lokal na komiks na sa mahabang panahon ay nakahikayat sa mayorya ng mga bata sa Pilipinas na gawing libangan ang pagbabasa.</p>
<p><strong>Pagpukaw sa Kabataan</strong><br />
May mga guro, prinsipal at edukador na handang pakulayan ang buhok na parang bahaghari, magsuot ng kagila-gilalas na kostiyum o magsilbing palamuti sa isang tabi mapukaw lang ang atensiyon ng mga batang mag-aaral sa maaari nilang matuklasan kung sila ay magbabasa.</p>
<p>“Ibalik natin ang mga aklat na hindi maaaring hindi tapusing basahin ng mga bata,” ito ang minsang naging hamon kay Dr. Seuss ng patnugot na si William Spaulding. Tinanggap ni Dr. Seuss ang hamon at nilikha niya ang mga aklat na babasahin ng milyon-milyong bata sa US at sa buong mundo.</p>
<p>Si Dr. Seuss ay walang dudang isa sa pinakadakilang manunulat ng akdang pambata sa lahat ng panahon. Sa Pilipinas, mailalagay sa katulad na pedestal sina Tony Velasquez, Francisco Coching, Mars Ravelo at iba pang gaya nilang lumikha ng mga imortal na tauhan at kuwento na magbibigay-aliw at makapaghihikayat sa mga batang Pinoy upang magbasa noon, ngayon, at mga darating pang panahon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The first ever issue of Pinoy Komiks Rebyu has recently released.  Dubbed as a &#8220;Limited Collectors&#8217; Edition&#8221; by its publishers, Randy Valiente and Fermin Salvador, Pinoy Komiks Rebyu is packed with encyclopedic articles about Philippine comics.</p>
<p>The review magazine also ran through a history of Philippine comics from 1889 to the present time. <span id="more-154"></span> </p>

<p>Written in Taglish, some of the articles found in &#8220;rebyu&#8221; are <em>Gumagamit na ba ng cellphone si Darna habang lumilipad?</em>, <em>Mga Dahilan ng Pagbagsak ng Komiks</em>, <em>Halakhak Komiks: Ang Unang Komiks sa Bansa</em>, and <em>Komiks: Mula Noon Hangga Ngayon</em>. </p>
<p>The &#8220;rebyu&#8221; is a great collection for comics enthusiasts and for everyone who love comics.  It promises to be just the start of something big. As co-publisher and editor Randy wrote, &#8220;Napakarami naming plan para sa magasin na ito, at ito pa lamang ang simula. Kasama na riyan ang pagbabalik-tanaw natin sa makulay at masaganang daigdig ng komiks sa Pilipinas, at ang pagiging mahalagang &#8216;medium&#8217; nito sa hinaharap.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mabuhay kayo, mga kaibigang Fermin at Randy. Sana lalo kayong magtagumpay sa inyong layunin na maibalik ang komiks sa dati niyang kinalalagyan sa ating mga kababayang mambabasa.</p>

<p>KOMIKS is packed with articles on a wide range of topics by the people who are themselves into the industry. Thus, the sub-title &#8220;Sa Paningin ng mga Tagakomiks&#8221; (&#8221;In the Eyes of those in Komiks&#8221;).<span id="more-15"></span></p>

<p>The articles (there are 61 of them) are categorised under five headings: Kasaysayan (History), Industriya (Industry), Anyo (Shape), Karanasan (Experience), and Komentaryo (Commentary). The writers are giants in the comics industry in their own right. They include Dennis Villegas, Aklas-Isip, Budgette Tan, Lawrence Mijares, Gerry Alanguilan, Karlo Cesar A. Cordero, Orvy Jundis, Randy Valiente, Joel Chua, Melvin Calingo a.ka. Taga-ilog, Auggie Surtida, Josie Avenurado, Jose Mari Lee, Michael Sacay, Michael Turla, Terry C. Bagalso, Dr. Romeo Flaviano Ibanez Lirio, Rosahlee G. Bautista, Beth Lucion-Rivera, Cora Torrente, Mario I. Macalindong, Gladys E. Gimena, Gilbert Monsanto, John Becaro, Macoy Tang, Carlo Vergara and Elena Patron.</p>
<p>I have learned a lot from the book. The articles I found of special interest include the historical accounts of Dennis Villegas like &#8220;The Beginnings of the Philippine Komiks Industry&#8221;, &#8220;A History of Liwayway Magazine&#8221;, &#8220;The Story of Ace Publications&#8221;, and &#8220;Bomba Komiks.&#8221;</p>
<p>The book, I understand, is not available in regular book store outlets. It is mainly distributed through Central Books in the Philippines, and it sells in book fairs and arts conventions in the Philippines where co-author/co-publisher Randy Valiente personally participates and signs copies of the book.</p>
<p>The book I have in my possession is actually a personal copy of the co-author/co-publisher Fermin Salvador who happened to be one of our active members of emanilapoetry Writers Group. Yes, Fermin is also an accomplished poet.</p>
<p>If you can find a copy of KOMIKS, Sa Pagtingin ng mga Tagakomiks, go and grab it! It&#8217;s a very rare book indeed which has put together the writings of &#8220;mga manunulat, dibuhista, editor, publisher at tagasubaybay ng komiks sa iisang aklat.&#8221;</p>

<p>The history of the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) is largely forgotten today in the Philippines and the United States.</p>
<p>Yankee DoodlesForgetting was officially sanctioned; volumes of newspaper accounts, military reports, government documents, autobiographies, biographies and letters by American soldiers all became part of a &#8220;forbidden book&#8221; &#8211; so that a war that was at least 50 times more costly in human lives than the Spanish-American War was relegated in American textbooks as only an &#8220;insurgency.&#8221;</p>
<p>A few late 19th century journalists and political cartoonists, however, managed to express unpopular truths of massacres, tortures, pillaging, and wholesale destruction of villages.</p>
<p>An anonymous editorial cynically read, &#8220;We may have burned certain villages, destroyed considerable property, and incidentally slaughtered a few thousand of their sons and brothers, husbands and fathers, etc., but what did they expect? … And they complain that drunken American soldiers insult the native women. What did they expect from a drunken soldier anyway?&#8221;</p>
<p>McKinley&#8217;s and US Senate&#8217;s perception of the Filipinos</p>
<p>In 1898, the Philippine Constitution was ratified, creating an executive branch, a representative assembly, and judiciary. Then came the election of a president and the dispatching of diplomatic representatives around the world. But the creation of the first republic in Southeast Asia was cut short by the United States when it imposed its imperialist demands on the new republic. The Philippine Revolution was thus forced to continue its pursuit for national independence in the Philippine-American War. The Philippine-American War was also to become America&#8217;s baptism as an imperialist colonial power in the Pacific, and this expansionist agenda was met with fierce resistance by Filipino Revolutionaries.</p>
<p>When President William McKinley told a delegation of church leaders that God had counseled him to annex the Philippines and &#8220;to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them,&#8221; few Americans knew that the Philippines had an educational system older than that of the United States and that the majority of Filipinos were Catholic.</p>
<p>McKinley&#8217;s depiction of Filipinos as uncivilized pagans played on prevalent racist sentiments and served to justify an unpopular war. One commonly held view ranked peoples of the world into four grades of culture &#8212; savagery, barbarism, civilization, and enlightenment. In this hierarchy, white America was the pinnacle of enlightenment while Filipinos belonged to the two lowest levels of culture and therefore incapable of self-government.</p>
<p>Senator Albert Beveridge in a famous Senate speech referred to Filipinos as &#8220;a barbarous race&#8221; of children incapable of even understanding &#8220;Anglo-Saxon self-government&#8221; adding: &#8220;[God] has marked the American people as his chosen nation to finally lead in the regeneration of the world. This is the divine mission of America, and it holds for us all the profit&#8230;&#8221; The first American teachers introduced English into hundreds of schools already in existence at that time but the myth that the U.S. brought the school to the Philippines remains to this day. American education became a tool for pacification and assimilation into the U.S. colonial system.</p>
<p>What to the United States was only an &#8220;insurgency&#8221; required the deployment of 126,000 U.S. troops, and took the lives of anywhere from 250,000 to a million people, the vast majority Filipino. Although the Philippine-American War was officially declared to have ended in 1902, fighting continued well beyond the first decade of the century.</p>
<p>Filipinos: the &#8220;gugus, niggers, and monkeys&#8221; of 1904</p>
<p>A fierce national debate ensued in the U.S. between pro- and anti-imperialists that became the subject of political campaigns and media editorials. In most publications Filipinos were presented to the American public as dark skinned savages. These portrayals were intended to project Filipinos and non-whites in general, as inferior beings within the racialized milieu of U.S. society. The imperialist cartoons appeared on the pages of Puck, Judge and Life magazines. These three were among the most influential opinion makers of their day. All three magazines employed some of the best artists of the day to draw for them. Puck and Judge were generally supportive of President McKinley. They wholeheartedly backed the U.S. war of conquest in the Philippines. In fact, at the time, Judge magazine was regarded as propaganda vehicle for the Republican party.</p>
<p>In these cartoons, Filipinos were portrayed as diminutive (slaves) (pickanninies) or wild beasts &#8211; images that were associated with blackness. These depictions were intended to vilify Filipinos as the enemy &#8211; much like Japanese, Vietnamese, and Arab peoples were demonized during the most recent wars. What Americans saw in pictures was reinforced by a racist language that labeled Filipinos as &#8220;gugus&#8221;, &#8220;niggers&#8221;, and &#8220;monkey,&#8221; and by the promotional hard sell of world fairs, such as the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, that displayed Filipinos along with other native peoples from other countries as uncivilized beings.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the United States set up a colonial arrangement with the help of Filipino elites that allowed US corporations unlimited access to Philippine natural resources such as timber and minerals, and control of major industries. They created a market in the islands for American surplus products, installed the largest military bases outside the US, and exploited Filipinos as a pool of cheap labor for US businesses and the military. Note the mass migration of contract workers recruited to work in the fields of Hawaii and California in the 1920&#8217;s and &#8217;30&#8217;s, and the mass recruitment of Filipinos in the US and the Philippines into the American military during WWII.</p>
<p>While many Americans led by the anti-expansionists opposed the colonial conquest of the Philippines, others argued that expansion was necessary for commerce and the capture of foreign markets for U.S. surplus products. Senator Albert Beveridge&#8217;s speech in Congress in 1900 was a rallying cry for U.S. imperialism: &#8220;The Philippines are ours forever&#8230;. And just beyond the Philippines are China&#8217;s illimitable markets&#8230;. Our largest trade henceforth must be with Asia. The Pacific is our ocean&#8230;. The Philippines gives us a base at the door of all the East.&#8221;</p>
<p>Struggles for justice</p>
<p>Pointing to a map on his wall, President William McKinley declared: &#8220;I sent for the chief engineer of the War Department and I told him to put the Philippines on the map of the United States &#8230; and there they will stay&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>On June 19, 1865, slaves in Texas learned of their emancipation; and on June 12, 1898, Filipinos declared their independence from Spain. Our separate histories are filled with many stories of struggles for justice. Now and then, the stories converge as it did in the Philippine American War when David Fagin and other African American soldiers joined the Filipino revolutionary forces to protect a fledgling republic from US domination. Their example foreshadowed the kind of inter-racial cooperation that became necessary for future generations to forge in the resistance against racism. Over the past 100 years Filipinos have continuously fought back against all forms of injustices.</p>
<p>&#8220;COLORED: Black and White&#8221;</p>
<p>In 2002, on the centennial of Philippine-American relations, three strong bulwarks of the Filipino activist community in California and the U.S. put together an exhibition of U.S. imperialist cartoons produced during the Philippine-American war. This exhibit, entitled &#8220;COLORED: Black and White,&#8221; presented drawings, editorial cartoons, photos, and news clips from prominent magazines and newspapers that covered the U.S. annexation of the Philippines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.</p>
<p>This exhibit is part of a larger archival collection that has been on tour until today at various universities and institutions in the U.S. and Philippines. Exhibit curators, Helen Toribio, Abe Ignacio and Jorge Emmanuel are long-time cultural and community Filipino American activists. Helen Toribio, who grew up in Hawaii, said the exhibit is a way to get a dark period of U.S. and Philippines history &#8216;out of my system.&#8217;</p>
<p>&#8216;Anyone who grew up here, grew up with the mythology of America the beautiful, the great democracy, and there is very little exposure to the dark side,&#8217; she said. &#8216;There is a lot that is hidden about American history.&#8217;</p>
<p>Many who have seen the images in the &#8220;COLORED: Black and White&#8221; exhibition were shocked. Larkspur artist Elizabeth Saul said the exhibit helps explain the concept of Manifest Destiny, the philosophy that sought to justify the United States&#8217; westward expansion. &#8216;These images speak so strongly,&#8217; she said.</p>
<p>&#8216;You can hear someone talk about (Manifest Destiny) over and over again, but when you are confronted with images that are vile, pompous and arrogant, it strikes a chord that words can&#8217;t communicate efficiently.&#8217; A section of the exhibit focused on similarities in the portrayals of Filipinos and African Americans. U.S. troops fighting in the Philippines referred to Filipinos as &#8216;niggers&#8217; or &#8216;gugus.&#8217; Berkeley artist Mildred Howard said the exhibit &#8216;makes something horrible visible.&#8217;</p>
<p>&#8220;Sangandaan 2003&#8243; and &#8220;Yankee Doodles&#8221;</p>
<p>This year, a centennial commemoration will be held in the Philippines.</p>
<p>&#8220;Sangandaan 2003&#8243;, an international conference on arts and media in Philippine-American relations, will present Filipino and Filipino-Americans the unique challenge and opportunity to assess, in reflective hindsight, how the events of the past century changed their lives.</p>
<p>The &#8220;COLORED: Black and White&#8221; exhibition is part of this commemoration, coming from an exhibition recently held at the UC San Diego Geisel Library and the Springfield College Art Gallery in City Heights. The exhibition in these venues, organized by John and Marivi Blanco, were spurred by the volunteer support by students at Miramar and Southwestern Colleges, as well as outreach events sponsored by UCSD students in various high schools and libraries throughout San Diego and Long Beach.</p>
<p>As the exhibition comes to Manila for the first time in July for &#8220;Sangandaan 2003,&#8221; it will be met by ten contemporary Filipino artists in an exhibition entitled &#8220;Yankee Doodles&#8221; to be held at the Main Gallery of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In the virtual absence of discussions on the history of the Philippine-American War, &#8220;Yankee Doodles&#8221; responds by remembering and interrogating this critical period in American and Philippine history, and its consequences and implications in today&#8217;s world.</p>
